Why I'm gonna watch Twilight Eclipse..
I never really got the whole Twilight Saga craze at first. I didn't watch the first Twilight movie when it first came out, and I actually watched Twilight New Moon before finally renting and watching the first one. I used to make fun of my friends who would get together on weekends and watch it on dvd over and over and I especially used to make fun of them when they would have seemingly dead serious discussions about Team Edward vs Team Jacob and who they thought was better for Bella Swan.
And the oddest part was that my friends weren't 13 year old giggly girls who swoon over the latest hollywood actor or famous singer, they were in their mid 20's, all had quite serious jobs, and as far as anyone who met them they were seemingly quite mature and social creatures. But then came Edward Cullen and Bella Swan played by the actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart and this odd story about vampires called the Twilight Saga and almost overnight these mature career oriented women turned into teenagers at a New Kids on the Block or NSync concert. And for all this I had quite a few laughs at their expense.
But now I get it. I get why they are so head over heals about this movie. I understand why they will go out of their way to stand in line for hours to watch Twilight Eclipse this summer when it's out in theatres. It's all pretty simple actually it's because of how much Edward loves Bella. It's because of how dedicated the character of Edward Cullen is to Bella Swan, so much so that in the movie he is willing to commit suicide when he mistakenly is lead to believe that she had died. It's because he was willing to leave her despite loving her more than anything in the world because he though that he was putting her life in danger and being selfish by staying with her.
So what's all this have to do with my friends? I'll tell you why: Because they wished that they could find a love as dedicated and deep as this in their own lives. But this isn't just something my friends are seeking, rather something that all of us want in our lives. Isn't that why Twilight has become such a popular phenomenon? Don't we all want someone in our lives so dedicated to us that they would do anything and go to any length to be with us? And as morbid as it sounds, don't we all want someone who, if they lost us, would be devastated? Maybe not try to commit suicide like Edward did by going to see the Volturi (a vicious group of old vampires) but you get the point nonetheless.
And so as the release date for Twilight Eclipse nears this summer and fans feverishly watch the official Twilight Eclipse trailers over and over until the images are almost burned into their computer monitors, rather than making fun of them for being childish and giggly little girls in love with fictional vampires and werewolves, I can finally honestly and wholeheartedly say: I get it.
And yes I'll be among the nuts waiting in line to watcht Twilight Eclipse on June 30th. What can I say, I'm a romantic at heart :)
