Many years ago, when I was playing games on the Apple such as the Ultima, it got to a point where it was just easier to cheat and get HIT points, gold and experience points by cheating. There used to be great programs that allows you to cheat by scanning the memory and looking for specific keywords within the memory. Then you compare the current value of your hit points with the one in the memory location. By guessing which memory address contains your hit point, you can then proceed to change the memory location and set the maximum amount possible.

Fast forward many years later, gamers are still doing it- cheating their way through games. One of the most used open source tool out there is Cheat Engine which is a software that allows the user to modify games with a memory scanner that quickly scan for variables used in the game. It also has other cool feature such as a disassembler, assembler, system inspections tool and more for the advance users. The only concern I have though is whether Cheat Engine is a trojan program that installs or does other thing besides what is advertised. Some anti-virus program seems to pick up that it is the case and anything associated with cheat engine didnt seem to be good. So, it is a software that you should use at your own risk. However, since the code is open source, you can download it and if you are a programmer and have the time, you can just go scan the code for any abmormalities. The latest Cheat Engine download is 5.5. Be warned on the download page that some anti-virus programs do believe that Cheat Engine is a trojan or virus and if you are worried, then don't download it at all and just slog your way through. There are user contributed cheat tables that you rely on as well and current support games are found below:

There are also online games that you can use Cheat Engine for. The problem though is that it works less well since online games do tend to sync up with the servers who really is the authority on the state of the game and so any changes you make on the client side will be reset eventually by the server.
